Electric Vehicle Terminology

PEVPlug-in electric vehicle. Includes battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs)
BEVRuns exclusively on electricity
PHEVRuns either on electricity from the plugging in or gasoline or a combination of both
MPGMiles per gallon of gasoline
MPGeHow far a PEV can travel on 34 kWh (one gallon of gasoline equivalent)
RangeMaximum distance on battery power in a PEV
Level I ChargerCharger connected to 120V AC household current. Typically limited to 1.44kW
Level II ChargerCharger connected to 208V (commercial) or 240V (household dryer) circuit. Typically 6.6kW
Onboard ChargerEach PEV has an onboard charger that converts AC energy to DC energy for the battery. This limits how fast a car can charge. PHEVs typically have a 3.3kW or less charger. BEVs typically have a 6kW or more charger, though some BEVs have 3.3kW charging.
